Women's Handicraft Centre (WHC) is one such organisation. WHC is a business enterprise with a social mission. A mission to assist marginalised women earn through decent means.
Who are these women?
Socially and economically disadvantaged, the women are from the town of Bolpur and neighbouring villages. Bolpur is a town in West Bengal, India. Bolpur's sister town, Santiniketan, is famous worldwide. Women from any age group and any religious background are welcome in WHC.
What decent means?
Artistic hand embroidery. WHC's ladies earn through the sale of hand embroidered products.
What's special with the hand embroidery of WHC?
The style is called "Kantha", a folk form of hand embroidery in Bengal, India. With the passage of time Kantha has evolved from a domestic need-based embroidery into commercial fashion-embroidery. Kantha has made a difference in the world of fashion and home decor. WHC has contributed substantially to taking Kantha embroidery to new heights.
Other specialisations of WHC are Batik as well as Gujarati and Kashmiri styles of embroidery.
