Bolpur is around 146 km north of Kolkata by train ; in the district of Birbhum in West Bengal, India. Bolpur's sister-town, Santiniketan, is renowned worldwide for its international university, Visvabharati, established by the famous poet, litterateur & philosopher, Rabindranath Tagore.

Summer temperatures reach low forties (Celsius) at its peak with humidity 80%+. In Winter, temperature drops to around 9 at the minimum. Winter is dry & dusty.

Major tourist attractions:- Santiniketan hosts several annual events. One of them is the Spring Festival ('Vasantotsav'). It is a single-day celebration ushering in the season of Spring through music, dance and spraying of coloured powder; held according to the Bengali calendar on a day within mid-March and early-April.

The major event is "Poush Mela" This fair is also held by the Bengali calendar ; starts either on 22nd or 23rd December. The four-day fair displays all aspects of folk tradition side by side with modernity.This fair is reputed all-over India and offers a fabulous variety of products and cultural events.
